Der düstere Roman "Quitt" gehört zum Spätwerk von Theodor Fontane (1819-1898) und erschien 1891 erstmals in Buchform. Im Zentrum der Geschichte steht der Wilddieb Lehnert Menz, der im schlesischen Riesengebirge den Förster Opitz erschießt, einen ebenso arroganten wie kleinbürgerlichen Vertreter der von Lehnert verachteten staatlichen Autorität. Lehnert flüchtet nach Nordamerika, wo er u. a. beim Bahnbau arbeitet, ehe er in einer Mennonitensiedlung endlich Ruhe findet. Ein schwerer, schließlich tödlicher Unfall in der Wildnis, der alle hoffnungsfrohen Lebenspläne Lehnerts zerstört, wird von ihm als moralische Quittierung seiner Schuld gedeutet.
