Ce livre, qui s'adresse plus aux professeurs de mathématiques qu'aux élèves présente les particularités suivantes :

  • On n'y utilise quasiment jamais l'instruction print (l'usage des fonctions et de la console lui étant préféré).
  • Les notions mathématiques abordées vont de la Grande Section (construction du nombre) au post-bac (algèbre linéaire) voire hors programme (lambda-calcul, catégories).
  • Il ne s'agit pas vraiment d'un cours de Python pour matheux mais plutôt d'un « Python par l'exemple ».
  • La simplicité de Python, ainsi que sa proximité avec la langue naturelle, en font un bon vecteur d'apprentissage des mathématiques.

Ce livre vise à faciliter la compréhension des mathématiques à travers l'utilisation de Python.
