Das Werk beschreibt die Programmiersprache gemäß des jüngsten Standards ("Fortran 90"), welcher alle Sprachmerkmale des vorherigen, derzeit noch weltweit im Einsatz befindlichen Standards ("FORTRAN 77") beinhaltet. Darüberhinaus dient das Werk einerseits für Kenner von Fortran als Einführung in den neuen Standard und andererseits - grundlegende Programmierkenntnisse vorausgesetzt - als Lehrbuch für die Programmiersprache Fortran schlechthin. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die ausführliche Beschreibung der weit über hundert vordefinierten Prozeduren sowie die Illustration sämtlicher Sprachmerkmale mittels typischer Beispiele.
