Heinrich Hubert Houben war ein deutscher Kultur-, Theater- und Literaturhistoriker und Publizist. Neben der Goetheforschung lag das Hauptaugenmerk seiner Forschungen auf der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema der Zensur, das auch im Fokus der vorliegenden Monographie steht. Houben diskutiert verbotene Literatur, Generalverbote gegen Verlagsfirmen, erzählt vom immer wiederkehrenden Abwehrkampf der Schriftsteller und Verleger, aber auch der Theater, gegen die stetig neuen Verordnungen der Staatsgewalten und Vorgehensweisen der Polizei im 19. Jahrhundert. §Es ist ein trauriges und erschreckendes Stück deutscher Kultur- und Geistesgeschichte, das Houben hier zeichnet aber auch eines das anmahnt und deswegen unbedingt gelesen werden muss. §Sorgfältig bearbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1926.
