Alberto Moravia si è dedicato alla poesia da ragazzo. Erano poco noti i testi poetici più tardi, scritti tra gli anni Settanta e i primi anni Ottanta. Le ottantatré poesie di questa raccolta, in gran parte inedite, allargano gli orizzonti dello sguardo artistico di un autore di cui tanto è stato detto e scritto, e che pure non smette mai di affascinare la critica e i lettori. Sono testi intimi che dialogano con il resto della sua opera perché attraversati da una riflessione sulla letteratura avviata in una fase matura della vita. Vi tornano costanti alcuni temi tipicamente moraviani – l'eros, il viaggio, il rapporto tra natura e storia, il passato e la memoria – affrontati nella forma di un diario personale in cui riprendere contatto con la parte più giovane di sé. Moravia si abbandona alle emozioni, le libera in versi narrativi che rinviano ai grandi argomenti metafisici, a cominciare dal tempo, per parlare poi del mondo, della passione, degli amori: a esplicita dimostrazione del suo profondo interesse per la poesia, manifestato anche come autore di racconti e romanzi in cui versi isolati o interi componimenti contribuiscono alla costruzione della trama.
