Von diesen «Kolbar» genannten Lastenträger*innen kommen jedes Jahr mehrere Dutzend zu Tode - als Opfer iranischer Grenzbeamter, durch Landminen, Lawinen oder die eisige Kälte.In «Papiervögel» wird Jalal, eigentlich ein Ingenieur, für eine solche Schmuggeltour angeheuert und begibt sich mit einigen Männern aus seinem Dorf auf die gefährliche Reise. Während unterwegs ein Träger nach dem anderen verunfallt oder gar zu Tode kommt, wartet eine junge Frau aus dem Dorf auf Jalals Rückkehr.
