Some human knowledge can never be fully written down. It lives in an artisan's hands and palate, shaped by the trials and patience of a lifetime.
Jean-Michel Walther is a master winemaker whose gold-medal wines have come from four hectares in Luins, a village on the slope above Lake Geneva. He has spent his whole life inside one square kilometer of that hillside, the third generation of his family to work it. He holds no diploma, and he has spent more than forty years learning what no classroom teaches: when to wait, when to cut, and when to leave a thing alone.
For two years, Jean-Claude Monney sat with him in the vineyard and the cellar, asking how he knows what he knows. Monney spent thirty years at Microsoft, latterly as its Chief Knowledge Officer, trying to capture expertise before it walked out of the building. He came to Luins to find out whether one man's judgment could be written down.
One Square Kilometer is the record of that attempt, and of what he found instead: a craft carried in the eye, the hand, and the memory of gestures repeated across a lifetime, with no one yet to carry it forward.
Following the wine from terroir to harvest, from cellar to glass, it is at once the portrait of a winemaker, a meditation on how mastery is learned, and a quiet warning about what disappears when living knowledge is not passed on.
Includes A Wine Vocabulary and Choreography, a winemaker's way of tasting.
