The Ecclesiastical History of Nikephoros Kallistu Xanthopulos was composed between 1309 and 1317 on the basis of older sources. It is the only surviving work of its kind from the middle and late Byzantine period, and is preserved in the codex unicus Vindob. hist. gr. 8. The work exerted a great influence on the reception of early church history in Western Europe through its Latin translation, published in 1553, while the first edition of the Greek text, which was later reprinted many times, did not appear was not published until 1630. The edition presented here forms the first of three volumes; it covers the first six of the total of 18 eighteen books and the period from Jesus Christ to the year 284.
