You already have the ticket. This is the rest of the map.

Every data centre runs on switchgear, standby generators, UPS and PDU - and it never goes down. That work is a permanent shift seat inside one building, not another jobsite that ends in six months. For a journeyman or industrial electrician tired of the churn, it is one of the shortest moves in the trades.

The expensive part is already behind you. You are not being asked to start a four-year apprenticeship; you are being asked to stack a handful of credentials that take weeks to months - NFPA 70E, OSHA 10 or 30, EPA 608 where relevant, plus any operating-engineer licence your city requires. That is the entire delta.

This field guide is written for someone who has already decided on mission-critical. It maps the hiring bar as hyperscaler and colocation postings actually state it, the credential sequence and the order to do it in, how operating-engineer licensing works city by city, the EOP, SOP and MOP discipline and switching culture you'll be held to, the interview, and the ladder above technician.

It is deliberately not a "careers in data centers" overview. It assumes your trade knowledge and sells you only the delta - including the honest parts: rotating shifts, on-call, escorted access, background and drug screening, and pay quoted only from employer-published bands with the city and date attached.

Licensing gets the heaviest signposting in the series, because this role is the most entangled. US electrical licensure is state-level, stationary and operating-engineer licensure is city-level with patchy reciprocity, and every fee and timeline is presented as verify-locally-as-at-this-date. NFPA 70E qualified-person status is an employer determination; switching authority is granted by the asset owner, never by a certificate. There is no switching instruction anywhere in this book. An Australian appendix covers state and territory licensing, HV switching units and authorised-operator status.

Same trade. Better building. No more jobsite churn.

Part of The Field Guides from Empire Publishing: researched, honest, no-fabrication career guides with a concrete "Do This Now" action in every chapter.
