Die Hypothese der Transsexualität als spezifischer Form künstlerischer Identität liegt der vorliegenden Untersuchung des Poeta en Nueva York von Federico García Lorca zugrunde. Die differenzierte Darstellung und Abgrenzung verwandter Phänomene wie Androgynie, Bisexualität und Transvestismus dient der Erörterung möglicher Zusammenhänge zwischen transsexuellen Strukturen und literarischer Ästhetik. Die Tatsache, daß die Symbolik der New Yorker Gedichte eine auffällige Vielzahl von botanisch/zoologischen, sowie mythologischen Bezügen zur Transsexualität aufweist, scheint dieses Vorhaben hinreichend zu rechtfertigen. Darüberhinaus lassen auch lebensweltliche Aspekte Schlüsse auf eine sexuelle Mehrdeutigkeit der Symbolik des Poeta en Nueva York zu. Ein zweisprachiger Anhang bietet eine annotierte Neuübersetzung von zehn relevanten Gedichten und trägt so zur Veranschaulichung der mehrdeutigen Ästhetik Lorcas bei.
