Michelet (1798-1874), pour comprendre la formation de la monarchie, a voulu en étudier la ruine : son Histoire de la Révolution française parut de 1847 à 1853. Elle est demeurée, depuis lors, parce que écrite au plus près des archives, le Grand récit de référence, historique, épique, lyrique. Il n'est jusqu'aux historiens contemporains, marxistes ou libéraux, qui n'y aient puisé, ne l'aient discuté, ne s'en soient inspirés. "Toute histoire de la Révolution jusqu'ici était essentiellement monarchique. Celle-ci est la première républicaine, celle qui a brisé les idoles et les dieux. De la première page à la dernière, elle n'a eu qu'un héros : le peuple."
