Kirjan tapahtumien aikana yhteiskunnallinen murros teki tuloaan ja Venäjän hallituksen ja suuriruhtinaan päätökset näkyivät ihmisten elämässä. Enemmän näkyivät kuitenkin arjen surut ja ilot. Suuret nälkävuodet tappoivat joukoittain ihmisiä, Amerikkaan lähdettiin etsimään onnea ja salaa toivottiin parempaa arkea.
