Das umfangreiche Epigrammkorpus Martials beinhaltet zahlreiche Gedichte, die auf verschiedene literarische Probleme sowie die Werke anderer Dichter seien es bereits kanonisierte Autoren, Zeitgenossen des Epigrammatikers oder fiktive Personen Bezug nehmen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden diese Dichtergedichte und ihre Funktion im Buch- bzw. Werkkontext erstmals systematisch analysiert. Martials wiederholte Auseinandersetzung mit anderen Autoren ist eng mit seinem Bestreben verbunden, das Genre der Epigrammatik, dem in der Antike nur ein niedriger Stellenwert eingeräumt wurde, in der Hierarchie der kanonischen Gattungen zu etablieren.
