Erstmals wird nun in diesem Band am Beispiel von 38 Autoren oder Sammlungen die Entwicklung des Märchens nachgezeichnet, es werden dabei seine Merkmale näher bestimmt. So rundet sich das Bild einer äußerst lebendigen und vielseitigen Gattungsgeschichte, die auf mittelalterliche und frühneuzeitliche Quellen zurückgeht, im 18. Jahrhundert popularisiert, im 19. Jahrhundert stärker normiert wird und die mit Kinderromanen wie J.K. Rowlings "Harry Potter" und Cornelia Funkes "Tintenherz" bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart reicht.
