Il 9 novembre 1961 sull'autostrada Milano-Torino pioveva a dirotto. Mario Tchou, capo della Divisione Elettronica Olivetti, era in auto verso Ivrea dove avrebbe presentato le ultime novita al consiglio di amministrazione. Aveva 37 anni, e sarebbe stato l'ultimo dei suoi viaggi. Su richiesta di Adriano Olivetti, era tornato in Italia dagli States dove dirigeva il prestigioso Hartley Laboratory. Aveva presentato alla Fiera di Milano un Elaboratore Elettronico Aritmetico, Elea 9003: il primo computer amente realizzato con elementi allo stato solido, i transistor. Questa macchina segnò un passaggio tecnologico fondamentale. Da allora, il mondo non sarebbe più stato lo stesso.
