Con más de un siglo de adelanto al ?89 francés y dos siglos antes del ?48 europeo, se originó la primera formulación en la historia de una alternativa republicana y democrática frente a la monarquía. Bajo el fuego de una confrontación en ocasiones dramática, habían sido forjadas las categorías fundamentales de una sociedad fundada en torno a la idea de un contrato libremente estipulado entre ciudadanos (esto es, Agreement of the People) y de un orden constitucional garantizado bajo el principio de la soberanía popular y el sufragio universal.
