Sirvió a cuatro monarcas: Pedro I, Enrique II, Juan I y Enrique III. Combatió en varias batallas y cayó prisionero en las revueltas de la Aljubarrota a manos de los portugueses. En su rescate, que costó treinta mil doblas, intervinieron su esposa, dońa Leonor de Guzmán, el maestre de Calatrava y los reyes, no sólo de Castilla, sino también de Francia, pues, entre otros muchos cargos, fue embajador en este país.
