Der Durchbruch gelang ihm jedoch nicht, zeit seines Lebens hatte er finanzielle Schwierigkeiten. Scheerbart verfasste eine Reihe von auf einzigartige Weise verspielten utopischen und phantastischen Romanen und Erzählungen, die wie "Lesabéndio" auch auf fernen Planeten spielen und mit der heutigen, technisch orientierten Science Fiction wenig zu tun haben. "Lesabéndio" erschien 1913; Walter Benjamin widmete dem Roman 1917 einen bewundernden Essay. Paul Scheerbart ist auch als Illustrator seiner eigenen Werke hervorgetreten.
