On lui doit notamment d'avoir, bien avant Michel Foucault, démontré que la sexualité est une construction sociale : c'est la célèbre théorie des scripts de la sexualité qui, cependant, reste encore peu connue en France. Il était donc grand temps de rendre à Gagnon ce qui est à Gagnon en présentant les deux principaux essais dans lesquels il développe sa théorie, ainsi qu'un troisième, sur la « sexualité à risque », où il applique de façon concrète ses idées au problème du sida, auquel il a consacré une grande part de son activité intellectuelle.
