A principis del segle XII, un monjo alemany conegut amb el nom de Teòfil, o Teòfil Prevere (Theophilus Presbyter), va escriure De diuersis artibus («Les diverses arts»), un tractat sobre les diferents tècniques artístiques emprades en la seva època que va dividir en tres llibres, dedicats respectivament a la pintura i la il·luminació de manuscrits, a la producció de vitralls de colors, i a l'orfebreria i el treball d'altres materials, com l'ivori. És, doncs, un document cabdal per conèixer l'art de decorar les esglésies i de fabricar objectes litúrgics i instruments musicals a l'edat mitjana. El present volum ofereix, juntament amb un estudi introductori i una edició crítica del text llatí, la primera traducció al català d'aquesta obra, de gran interès tant per la seva qualitat literària com per la valuosa informació que aporta sobre aspectes bàsics de la cultura medieval europea.
