En 1943, le chimiste suisse Albert Hofmann (né en 1906), travaillant sur certaines propriétés cardio-actives des champignons, découvre, par hasard, une substance aux vertus hallucinogènes : le LSD. On sait quelle fut l'importance du LSD dans les années «psychédéliques». Ernst Jünger, qu'Albert Hofmann rencontra très tôt, Cary Grant, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Timothy Leary participèrent à populariser cette substance, tout d'abord utilisée en psychothérapie, puis attachée à la beat generation, devenant alors le symbole d'une contre-culture de désobéissance civile, avant d'être interdite en 1967. Cette rencontre avec un vieux sage, conscient des dangers de sa découverte, est l'occasion de réfléchir sur le rôle des drogues dans la création artistique et dans l'évolution des civilisations.
