Lorsque les insurgés s’emparent de Paris, il devient maire du xixe arrondissement. Le lendemain de l’insurrection, il est condamné à mort par contumace. Son journal, Le Cri du peuple, est interdit. Dans ce troisième volume autobiographique, après L’Enfant et Le Bachelier, l’auteur montre son héros, Jacques Vingtras, sur les barricades, dans le feu de l’action, au milieu des morts et des blessés. Son écriture rapide, sa vision fulgurante des scènes de combat, font de ce livre le cri de la Commune. Jules Vallès mourut, épuisé, à cinquante-trois ans, en murmurant : « J’ai beaucoup souffert. »Préface, commentaires et notes de Roger Bellet.
