Ils étaient vingt-trois et vingt-deux d'entre eux furent fusillés par les nazis le 21 février 1944 au mont Valérien, tandis que la seule femme du groupe, Olga Bancic, sera décapitée quelques mois plus tard à Stuttgart. L'affiche aux couleurs de sang, placardée sur les murs de France par la propagande allemande, montrait leurs visages torturés et les stigmatisait comme une repoussante "armée du crime". De leur combat héroïque, Aragon fit un poème chanté par Léo Ferré. Un mythe était né. Ce récit superbe évoque le monde d'où ils venaient : le 11ᵉ arrondissement de Paris, quartier populaire juif et rouge, les bals du 14-Juillet, les jeunesses communistes, le yiddish qu'ils apprenaient après l'école. Et surtout la France qu'ils aimaient tant. Immigrés certes, étrangers évidemment, mais français, très français, comme plus personne n'ose l'être aujourd'hui. En veilleur inlassable doublé d'un essayiste brillant, Benoît Rayski, dont le père dirigeait la section politique des FTP-MOI, l'organisation militaire du Parti communiste pour les étrangers, ressuscite, le temps d'un livre, ce monde englouti, bouleversant de chaleur et de générosité. Un voyage qui permet de capter un peu de la lumière qui illuminait les vingt-trois de l'Affiche rouge.
