Eine der Grundfragen der Soziologie lautet: Wie ist Gesellschaft möglich? Dierk Spreen zeigt in der vorliegenden Untersuchung an drei Fällen, dass von einer konstituierenden Funktion des Krieges für moderne Gesellschaften gesprochen werden kann. Zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts ist der Krieg Anlass für einen öffentlichen Aktivierungsdiskurs, der die Hervorbringung oder Begründung eines sozialen Ganzen und einer sozialen Moral im Auge hat. Im Kontext seiner Totalisierung in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wird der Krieg zum Motor der Steigerung der gesellschaftlichen Produktivität und systemischen Funktionalität. Heute dagegen ist Krieg ein Mittel, um den Raum zivilgesellschaftlicher Normalität im Rahmen eines globalen politischen Sicherheitsmanagements zu sichern. In diesen drei Fällen erweist sich Krieg als integraler Bestandteil bei der Konstitution je moderner Formen von Gesellschaft.
