Der aus Breslau stammende Rechtsanwalt, Drehbuchautor und Schriftsteller Alfred Schirokauer (1880-1934) verfasste u. a. eine Reihe erfolgreicher historischer Romanbiografien, etwa über Ferdinand Lassalle, Lord Byron, Napoleon, Mirabeau und Lukrezia Borgia. Kleopatra VII. Philopator (69 v. Chr. 30. v. Chr.) war die letzte Herrscherin des Ptolemäerreiches in Ägypten und zugleich die letzte Pharaonin. Ihr Versuch, als Geliebte sowohl von Caesar als auch nach dessen Ermordung von Marcus Antonius die Unabhängigkeit Ägyptens von Rom zu bewahren, scheiterte, nachdem Marc Anton von dem späteren Kaiser Augustus im Bürgerkrieg besiegt worden war. Nicht zuletzt der gemeinsame Freitod von Kleopatra und Marc Anton hat die Phantasie von Autoren seit der Antike immer wieder beflügelt. Alfred Schirokauers biografischer Roman wurde 1930 erstmals veröffentlicht.
