Les oeuvres, romans, biographies, autobiographies et articles de Klaus Mann furent trop longtemps considérés comme un genre mineur, comparés à ceux de son père, Thomas Mann, et de son oncle, Heinrich. À tort. Car l'oeuvre de Klaus constitue une richesse mémorielle, un témoignage incontournable de cette jeunesse allemande de l'entre-deux-guerres. Jeunesse grisée par la joie insouciante des bouchons de champagne qui fusent. Puis, jeunesse prise crescendo par l'angoisse et la terreur grandissante annoncée par le bruit des bottes nazies qui claquent sur le pavé des villes allemandes. Jusqu'à « l'explosion du volcan ».
