Una de las características más importantes del haiku, junto con el número de sílabas 5-7-5, es el kigo (季語) o palabra que lo enmarca en una estación determinada. En Japón, como guía para escribir haiku, se consultan algunos de los numerosos Saijiki (歳時記) o diccionarios de kigo de las cinco estaciones (primavera, verano, otoño, invierno y año nuevo) que a su vez se dividen en 24 subestaciones dada la extrema sensibilidad de los japoneses hacia la naturaleza y el importante papel de ésta en su cultura. Compilado y traducido por Seiko Ota y Elena Gallego, especialistas en literatura japonesa, este libro puede ser considerado el primer, aunque breve, Saijiki en español e incluye numerosos haiku de autores contemporáneos.
