On the morning of her byline, Nayana Wijesuriya had seven days left, and she spent the first of them happy.

Colombo, 2007. A journalist publishes fourteen column inches proving that a private company with no office has been billing the state for "transport services" on nights when people disappear.

A week later, she is taken from a bus stand in front of a hundred witnesses. Her briefcase enters a police property register. The case is closed with a stamp:

NO PRODUCTIVE LEADS.

Twelve years later, in a Water Board supervisor's house in Wattala, an eleven-year-old girl draws the same bus stand three times.
