'Kappa' ist die umfangreichste und nach 'Rashomon' wohl bekannteste Erzählung Ryunosuke Akutagawas. In diesem sehr persönlichen Werk projiziert der Autor seine Gedanken zur japanischen Gesellschaft und zu seinem eigenen Leben auf die Hauptfigur, den Patienten einer Nervenheilanstalt in Tokyo. Dieser berichtet von seiner Reise in das Land der Kappas. Diese froschähnlichen Wesen leben in einer Welt, die zugleich märchenhafte wie erschreckende Merkmale aufweist. Wie bei Swifts Gulliver und bei Carrolls Alice im Wunderland verwendet Akutagawa bei der Darstellung der Kappawelt die satirischen Mittel der Übertreibung und der Umkehrung von Sachverhalten, um dem Leser einen Spiegel vorzuhalten. Es entsteht ein düsteres Menschen- und Gesellschaftsbild, das gerade durch die vermeintlich komischen Episoden an kritischer Schärfe gewinnt. Kappa entstand im Februar 1927, nur fünf Monate vor dem Freitod Akutagawas, der in seinem Abschiedsbrief bekannte, im letzten halben Jahr seines Lebens an nichts anderes als an das Sterben gedacht zu haben. So ist der Selbstmord des Kappa-Dichters Tock im dreizehnten Kapitel der Erzählung wohl als Ankündigung seines eigenen Schicksals zu verstehen.
