Lord Byron (1788 1824) verfasste dieses Drama 1821, in dem er auf die biblische Geschichte von Kain und Abel zurückgreift, diese aber grundlegend veränderte. Kain ist nun ein Empörer gegen den Sündenfall, mit dem Gott zum Verursacher allen menschlichen Leids geworden ist. Luzifer erkennt in Kain einen Mitstreiter in seinem Kampf gegen Gott und stachelt dessen Hass noch weiter an. Als Kain schließlich auf seinen fanatisch gläubigen Bruder Abel trifft, kann sich Kain gegen dessen Glaubensfuror nur noch durch den fatalen Brudermord wehren. Das Drama ist im Verständnis Byrons weniger ein Bühnenstück als vielmehr eine literarisch-philosophische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Christentum, dem der Dichter seine religionskritische und rationalistische Weltsicht entgegenstellt.
