Offizier eines Kohlefrachters soll Marlow seine erste Tour nach Asien unternehmen. Doch die Reise wird immer wieder durch Schäden am Schiff behindert, bis der Dampfer schließlich vor Java in Brand gerät und unter dramatischen Umständen aufgegeben werden muss.
