Die originär barocke literarische Gattung der "Scharfsinnigen Inschrift" ist zwischen gebundener und ungebundener Rede angesiedelt. Sie zeichnet sich durch ihre zentrierte äußere Form, ihre argute Diktion sowie ihre gedruckten und ungedruckten Erscheinungsweisen aus. Erarbeitet werden v.a. die rhetorische und poetologische Theoriebildung im Neulateinischen und die Rezeption in der deutschen Literatur (v.a. Masen, Tesauro, Harsdörffer, Birken, Weise und Morhof). Zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts ist das Ende der "Scharfsinnigen Inschrift" besiegelt, das zum einen auf die Kritik an der Argutia-Bewegung zurückzuführen ist, zum anderen auf ein verändertes Verhältnis von Schrift und Gelehrsamkeit in der Frühaufklärung.
