Von besonderer Bedeutung sind hierbei das Informationsverhalten und seine Effektivität und Effizienz. Stefan M. Schreiber untersucht Prüfungsprozesse, vor allem Jahresabschlussprüfungen, aus verhaltenswissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Er stützt sich dabei im Wesentlichen auf die anglo-amerikanische Prüfungsforschung und nutzt als theoretischen Bezugsrahmen den Informationsverarbeitungsansatz der kognitiven Psychologie, der eine phasenspezifische Betrachtung des Informationsverhaltens von Prüfern impliziert. Außerdem wird mit der Expertise von Wirtschaftsprüfern ein personales Merkmal besonders berücksichtigt, welches das Informationsverhalten in zentraler Weise beeinflusst.
