Infection and inflammation are not synonymous. Infection is caused by an exogenous pathogen while inflammation is the response of an organization to exposure to that pathogen. Without inflammation wounds and infections would never heal, but unchecked inflammation can lead to such diseases as hay fever, atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. These six articles comment on fairly recent research on inflammation and include such topics as the relations between the central nervous system and inflammation as it relates to astrocytes or microglia, the role of inflammation in Type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, inflammation and neurotrauma, and the role of immune mediators in the pathophysiology of ischemic stroke as it relates to inflammation. The collection closes with a review of studies of basic concepts of inflammation.
