In One Peace is an intimate memoir about identity, memory, trauma, faith, creativity, and the lifelong search to understand who we are.
Brooke Cherie Dennis looks back across a life shaped by international childhood experiences, family relationships, professional changes, horses, broadcasting, music, art, motherhood, and mental health. From growing up between Louisiana, Brazil, and Venezuela to finding her voice through horses, radio, television, and creative expression, she examines the experiences that helped shape the person she became.
At the heart of the memoir is a question that has followed Dennis throughout her life: What makes all the different pieces of a person belong together?
Using the images of a broken mirror and a prism, she reflects on dissociation, trauma, memory, diagnosis, and identity while resisting the idea that one explanation can account for an entire life. Her experiences with show jumping, veterinary work, equine bodywork, coffee, broadcasting, music, and art become different windows through which she explores observation, communication, discipline, resilience, and self-understanding.
The journey also moves through difficult childhood memories, cultural transitions, family relationships, faith, motherhood, and the challenges of making sense of painful experiences without allowing them to define an entire identity.
In One Peace is ultimately a reflection on accepting complexity, remaining curious, and learning to live with unanswered questions. It is a story about examining the past honestly while continuing to grow, create, learn, and move forward.
