Der aus Stettin stammende Franz Hessel (1880-1941) war Schriftsteller, Lektor und Übersetzer, u. a. von Balzac und Marcel Proust. Vor dem ersten Weltkrieg gehörte er der Münchner Boheme an und hielt er sich mehrere Jahre in Paris auf. In diese Zeit fällt seine Dreiecksbeziehung mit seiner späteren Frau Helen Grund und dem Autor Henri-Pierre Roché, die als Vorlage für Francois Truffauts Filmklassiker "Jules und Jim" diente. In den 20er Jahren lebte Hessel in Berlin, wo er für Rowohlt arbeitete und empfindsame Romane und Feuilletons über die Stadt schrieb. 1938 emigrierte er und starb 1941 an den Folgen der Haft in einem französischen Internierungslager.
