Katie Clover had been dead for twenty-five years, and there had been DNA carrying her killer's profile since the second week of the investigation, skin cells recovered from under her fingernails, fetal DNA from a pregnancy nobody, not even her best friend, had known about until the autopsy. Run it through every database available back in the summer of 2000 and you got nothing, no match, no name, just a lab folder that got thinner every year while a promising eighteen-year-old runner from South Knoxville became a case number and then, eventually, almost nobody's problem at all. What that DNA had been waiting for wasn't a suspect. It was better technology, and twenty-five years.

The waiting fell hardest on one person. Homicide detective Megan Hawkes has spent a quarter century accounting for thirty seconds: the length of time it took to kneel down and retie a loose shoelace during an evening run with her best friend, then look up and find the street ahead of her empty. Katie was already gone. Days later they found her in a drainage culvert not far from where she vanished, arranged with a care that was somehow worse than violence, shoes set neatly beside her, hair brushed and spread across the concrete like someone had wanted her to look at peace. She hadn't been. You know what that kind of arithmetic does to a person. Carry thirty seconds long enough, and it stops being a memory. It becomes a career.

When new genealogical technology finally gives the old DNA somewhere to go, the department reopens Katie's file over real reservations about letting Megan anywhere near it. She's assigned to the task force anyway, though not to lead it: her partner, Luc Phan, leads on paper, and Megan works the case as his second, everyone in the room understanding whose case it has always been. Alongside a handful of detectives whose reasons for joining are not all what they appear to be, she starts pulling on a thread that was never actually as cold as the department's paperwork insisted.

What she finds is not the kind of resolution that closes a case. It's gnosis: knowledge that changes the person who receives it and can't be unlearned or handed back. It costs Megan the last of her composure. And underneath all of it sits a piano Megan hasn't touched since the funeral, and an old French piece by Erik Satie called Gnossienne, written with no time signature at all, meant to be played, like grief, at whatever pace it demands.

Set against the streets, neighborhoods, rivers, and ridges of Knoxville, Tennessee, GNOSSIENNES is a literary crime novel about memory, grief, and friendship. For readers of Tana French's In the Woods and Kate Atkinson's Case Histories who want their mysteries to ask what justice actually costs the people left holding it.
