Mit seiner Lehre von einem Leben in Harmonie und Gleichgewicht, das den Menschen mit der allumfassenden höheren Ordnung verbindet, ist er bis heute von zentraler Bedeutung für das chinesische Selbstverständnis. Seine Lehrgespräche (chinesisch Lun Yü), aphoristisch zugespitzte Kurzerzählungen und Bemerkungen, wurden 1921 von dem bekannten Sinologen und Missionar Richard Wilhelm, der zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts lange Jahre in China zubrachte, ins Deutsche übertragen.
