Und so versucht er sich am Bild seiner imaginären Projektion - Tyler Durden - zu komplettieren. Die mediale Reflexion der dualen Beziehung zwischen dem Namenlosen und Tyler Durden illustriert adäquat, das von Jacques Lacan konstatierte Phänomen des Spiegelstadiums. Darüber hinaus kritisiert der Film unentwegt die Gesellschaft sowie die kommerziellen Massenmedien. Finden sich hier kulturkritische Ansätze? Seife aus Frauen! Verdinglichung, Entfremdung, etwa der Mensch als Ware? Kann denn ein Film die kommerziellen Massenmedien kritisieren, wenn er doch selbst Teil jener Maschinerie ist?
