Der vorliegende Band erschien zuerst 1920 und lässt die zunehmende Spannung zwischen Gundolf und George spüren. Gundolf selbst war einer der führenden Literaturwissenschaftler der Weimarer Republik, der 1964 von der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung gestiftetete und jährlich vergebene Friedrich-Gundolf-Preis erinnert an den 1931 verstorbenen Autor. Nachdruck der 1920 in Berlin herausgekommenen Erstausgabe.
