Als sich der Zweite Weltkrieg im Frühjahr 1945 seinem Ende näherte, waren die Ressourcen der Wehrmacht in vielfacher Hinsicht erschöpft. Eine sehr große Anzahl deutscher Soldaten wurde gefangen genommen und in primitive Sammellager entlang von Rhein und Nahe gebracht, die von den Siegermächten hastig auf Ackerflächen errichtet und mit Stacheldraht eingezäunt wurden. Angesichts der Überzahl von Kriegsgefangenen sahen sich die Alliierten völlig überfordert - eine funktionierende Lagerorganisation fehlte zunächst. Die Folge waren katastrophale Zustände, was Verpflegung, Unterkunft und Hygiene betraf. Tausende starben durch Unterernährung, Erschöpfung und Krankheit. Die Geschichte der so genannten Rheinwiesenlager zwischen Remagen und Ludwigshafen wird hier erstmals zusammenfassend dargestellt. Eine erschütternde Dokumentation zu einem Thema, das Jahrzehnte fast totgeschwiegen wurde.
