The perimeter has been repaired. The reports have been closed. The witnesses have been sent home.

At a remote military research installation in the American Southwest, Ethan Ward is assigned to escort contractors replacing sensor equipment along the eastern perimeter. The work is presented as routine maintenance.

Then the equipment begins responding before it is connected.

The ground moves beneath their boots. Signals appear where none should exist. And inside a restricted service strip, Ethan sees a human-shaped figure that the facility's monitoring systems insist was never there.

Reporter Maya Ward is finally granted access to the installation through a carefully managed public-affairs tour. Behind the language of transparency, environmental safety and community partnership, she catches fragments of another operation: an altered route, a sealed service corridor and movement inside a yard no visitor was meant to see. Before she reaches the car park, the facility has already contacted her editor.

Deep inside the installation, systems analyst Dr Adrian Hale is transferred into a more restricted research section. His corrections are being used to stabilise a structure larger than anything within his clearance. His work succeeds.

That may be the most dangerous result of all.

As military procedure, newsroom caution and scientific control close around them, three witnesses are pushed back towards ordinary life carrying separate pieces of the same impossible pattern. The town still functions. The official explanation still holds.

But whatever is happening behind the perimeter is no longer remaining there.

Field Adjustment is Book Two of The Open Gate, a slow-burn science-fiction horror series of secret research, institutional denial, scientific anomalies and ordinary lives placed under the pressure of something no human system is prepared to understand.
