Sie landen auf Bestsellerlisten, werden ironisch in Fernsehserien verarbeitet oder in aller Ernsthaftigkeit für Ankündigungen einer bevorstehenden globalen Invasion gehalten. Wie kann es sein, dass diese Fantasien fast ausschließlich in der amerikanischen Kultur Fuß gefasst haben? Dieser Frage widmet sich dieses Buch. Dabei wird das Phänomen der Berichte von Entführungen durch Außerirdische die Alien Abduction Narratives von unterschiedlichen Seiten beleuchtet: Die Berichte weisen nämlich nicht nur Verbindungen zu Verschwörungstheorien auf, sondern haben auch deutliche Parallen zum evangelikalen Diskurs und sind generell im Puritanismus verankert. Darüber hinaus arbeiten die Berichte mit literarischen Mitteln wie wir sie aus dem sensationalistischen Genre kennen. Doch ihre größte Anziehungskraft liegt möglicherweise darin, dass in den oft erotisch aufgeladenen - fantasierten Begegnungen mit den fremden Aliens die eigene Kultur als primitiv und unterlegen imaginiert und das Problem eines multikulturellen Zusammenlebens fiktiv aufgelöst wird.
