Si s?haacusat Dumas de desviar-se o d?allunyar-se de l?assumpte principal deles seves obres, sens dubte no és el cas d?aquesta obra curta,conduïda a un ritme gairebé cinematogràfic (ha estat objecte denombroses adaptacions cinematogràfiques d?ençà de l?any 1898). Laconcisió és sorprenentment eficaç, probablement perquè Dumas encaraescriu sota la influència del dramaturg.
