Però la identitat és un bé escàs que els poders fàctics procuren controlar. El paper central en aquest camp d'operacions correspon encara a l'Estat. Contra la globalització i la balcanització de les narratives, els estats contraataquen per fer sostenible la gran narrativa nacional. Ho constatem a Europa, ho comprovem a l'Estat Espanyol: què queda de l'Estat si no és la seva funció de policia de la nació? D'aquí també l'interrogant sobre el "nosaltres" d'un espai català d'identitats: no estem en el pendent accelerat de la substitució? El meu país va quedar finalista del premi d'assaig Josep Vallverdú, 2000.
