In dem 1912 veröffentlichten, längeren Essay "Ecce poeta" beschäftigt sich Friedell auf ebenso überraschende wie brillante Weise mit der Frage nach dem Wesen von Dichtung angesichts der heraufdämmernden literarischen Moderne des 20.
