Il 3 gennaio 1698 nasce a Roma Pietro Trapassi. Il giurista letterato Gianvincenzo Gravina, preso a benvolere il fanciullo ne grecizza il nome in Metastasio e lo affida all'educazione del filosofo cartesiano Gregorio Caloprese. Entrato in Arcadia come Aretino Corasio, Pietro scrive l'Angelica in cui Carlo Broschi, con cui intreccerà un legame che durerà tutta la vita, interpreta il ruolo di Tirsi. L'appoggio di Marianna d'Althann, e soprattutto la fama ottenuta coi sette libretti dal 1794 in poi, fruttano a Metastasio la raccomandazione di Apostolo Zeno e l'incarico di poeta cesareo dal 1730. A Vienna, dove rimane fino alla morte, scrive diciannove drammi, sette oratori per la quaresima, sonetti, rime diverse, poemetti in ottave e terzine.
