1970 erlebte Thomas Bernhards erstes Abend füllendes Theaterstück, "Ein Fest für Boris", seine Uraufführung in Hamburg. Die sich anschließenden, mehr als 15 Stücke trugen entscheidend dazu bei, im In- und Ausland Thomas Bernhard als den grandiosen Theatermacher deutscher Sprache zu installieren. Den Höhepunkt seiner Wirkung als Dramatiker erreichte er wenige Monate vor seinem Tod mit dem Stück "Heldenplatz". Die Umstände der Aufführung, wie die Aufführung selbst, verwandelten Österreich, anläßlich des 50. Jahrestags des Anschlußes Österreichs an das nationalsozialistische Deutschland, in eine Bühne, auf der das Weiterwirken des Faschismus thematisiert wurde. Bernhard triumphierte. §Erst nach seinem Tod wurde "Elisabeth II." uraufgeführt und setzte so eine Reihe von Neuinszenierungen in Gang, die bis heute anhält und Thomas Bernhard zu einem der meistgespielten Autoren auf den europäischen Bühnen macht.
