Mary, the philanthropist, spends so much time trying to help others that she fails to give love to the one closest to her. The wealthy couple, Rose and Ramon, are unable to reconcile their differences and lose the one thing that money cannot buy. The jealous Elizabeth tries to inculcate her daughter with the bitterness of her own failed marriage, and the disenchanted Charles, whose alienation in the machinery of modern life has nullified his capacity to feel, hangs on to the last threads of his marriage.
