Das Wesentliche in dieser Schrift ist der Grundsatz, den Maistre schon im ersten Brief aufstellt: videant consules, ne respublica capiat. Anders gesagt, jede Bedrohung des Staates kann nur durch Mittel von ebensolcher Gewaltsamkeit gebannt werden. Die spanische Inquisition war also die angemessene Reaktion auf eine gegebene Gefahr, und der Inquisition verdankte - nach de Maistre - Spanien letztlich seine Rettung.
